Something else that is important whatever your goals are in living healthier is having a vision of where you want to be and use that as your motivator. Zig Ziglar once said, People often say that motivation doesn't last. Well, neither does bathing that's why we recommend it daily.
When thinking about your motivation, consider your why. What's your life purpose. What will you be able to do by being healthier or staying healthy as you age.
If you have identified your life purpose; if you know your why, then when things get tough, as they always will, you'll be able to use that to get past the obstacles in your life. It's your life jacket that you can cling to until you get to safer shores.
There is a great quote that I love:
Watch your thoughts. They become words.
Watch your words. They become actions.
Watch your actions. They become habits.
Watch your habits. They become character.
Character is everything.
And watch your character for it becomes your destiny
Ralph Waldo Emerson, Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu, Frank Outlaw, and the father of Margaret Thatcher have all been credited with this quote so I am listing all here.
So it's knowing your why and living by it. It's not just the actions. It starts with the words. What are you saying. If you say that you are always overweight or that you are never in shape or anything that negates what you are trying to accomplish, you are already setting yourself up for failure. Re-frame it in a more positive way. And as you watch your words, you'll see how they support your actions and the healthy habits you adopt.
But getting back to your why. Your why is so important and TriVita has a Wellness Center that is dedicated to helping you on your wellness journey and one key component they start with is helping you to clarify your why. When you first walk in the doors, you'll see a sign that says Why Are You Here.
Take time out to discover your why. As you reflect on your why, you'll find you are starting to talk about it and establishing habits that support it that then become a part of you and become part of your destiny. Start on the journey of finding your life purpose and you'll be amazed at the difference it will make in your life as you become someone greater than yourself.
The second important thought that I would like to share with you on motivation is to set a goal to read inspirational books or videos or audios to motivate you every day. If you have to, make an appointment with yourself so no one else bothers you. Jack Canfield was a guest on one of my training calls, and he had shared how he starts off the day reading something motivational and at the end of the day he has a journal of what he has accomplished. Think about it. Many of us are setting our goals (or should be) at the end of the day of what we need to do next. We also need to congratulate ourselves on what we have accomplished. Jack Canfield also shared a great exercise is to write down all the things that you have accomplished in your life, and when you need a boost of encouragement, review the list. It may be difficult at first but as you start to write down your accomplishments, you'll start to remember more. Write down everything from taking your first steps to the first time you successfully rode your bike! Riding a bike is a major accomplishment. When learning to ride a bike, you probably fell a few times before finally being able to stay on, though maybe a little wobbly at first. Then you got better and better until you thought nothing of it.
So if you have a goal of being healthier, and it may see overwhelming, make the first step to establish your why. The second step is to take baby steps. Haven't exercised in a while? Start out small. Go for a short walk. Of course, talk to your doctor before starting anything new. Want to eat healthier? Don't make a drastic change to your diet. That will make it too hard. Try eliminating one thing that is not good for you and adding one thing that is good for you. So maybe instead of the chocolate chip cookies, eat an apple instead.
The most important thing you can do is get started, even if it's just a small step forward.
Thank you again for reading and I look forward to sharing more.
